Let’s get the champagne poppin and that wardrobe shining! Avant-garde stylist Jonard Palteng joins our pool of stylist this month and is excited to give you a fabulous June Blowout.
The exquisite stylist has been doing projects for reality TV and runway shows. With his background in high fashion, you can look forward to top-notch fashion pieces in your Surprise-Me boxes. Feel thrilled and terrific as most of Jonard’s clients are professional models. Expect nothing but the best this month!
Based on your portfolio, you are exposed to high fashion. What do you love about this style genre?
There’s something about high fashion that gives you a license to break the rules, break through your creative ceiling, and just go all out crazy. It’s about creating a story and that story has no bounds. It is limitless. Also, it challenges you to go beyond the usual and predictable; create something new.
Who's your favorite fashion icon?
I have several personas that I look up to in terms of style. There’s Nick Wooster, Tilda Swinton, Anna dello Russo, George Cortina, Fredrik Risvik. They have different styles, yes. But what I love about them is that they have a real grasp of who they are, and what their aesthetic is. They may follow trends but it doesn’t overwhelm them. At the end of the day, they look like themselves, not another street style peacock.
What was the most successful styling project you've had?
I was part of a fashion reality show a few years back and we had a do-or-die challenge and I had no dresses with me. I only had jackets while the rival stylist had these sparkling cocktail dresses. I managed to turn three jackets into an origami-cocktail dress and the judges found my resourcefulness and creativity impressive. I'm so happy that our team ended up winning the challenge.
Why do you love styling people?
Clothes have a certain power to change personas and identities. Some people are really good at conveying a message through their style but some people sort of just hit or miss. Styling people gives me an avenue to bring out what the person is trying to express in the best way possible. Be it a simple message or one that conveys a mighty one, clothes and style empower this message and brings it across.
In your opinion, how can style improve self-image?
Know yourself, know your body, and know your style. Embrace the real you. There are clothes for everyone and there’s no point buying clothes that don’t speak the true you. Every article of clothing must make you happy. Because if you only wear things that make you happy, you won’t have any problem dressing up in the morning.
Aside from styling people, do you have any other talent?
I also do photography! Being a photographer and stylist gives you a unique point of view when creating a look.
If you were to do something crazy for styling, what would you do?
I would definitely create a fashion editorial featuring archive pieces from Christian Dior by John Galliano then juxtapose them with pieces from the current collections of Maison Martin Margiela and Comme des Garcons. Then probably shoot it in an anti-gravity chamber to change the dynamics of the clothes. It will be a visual feast for the eyes!
Jonard, tell us something interesting about yourself.
I also do photography! Being a photographer and stylist gives you a unique point of view when creating a look. I’m also a big fan of thrift shopping. I’ve seen lots of amazing and runway pieces for seriously low prices. It’s almost like I’m cheating fashion! Oh, and I make some pretty bad ass headdresses too.
What's your fashion mission for your StyleGenie clients?
I want my Style Genie clients to feel good and look good in the skin they’re in. I’m not going to change who they are but I wish to enhance and bring out their style story. Have them express who they truly are. And look good while they’re doing it.
