Everyone has heard someone else say that they looked horrible in yellow, but blue just made their eyes pop. Have you ever wondered how they know for sure which colors flatter them and which ones just clash? Well, the secret lies in your skin, in something called your undertones.
You’ve probably heard of undertones if you’re a makeup addict as it helps you determine the right foundation shade for you. For those who aren’t familiar with undertones, let’s get one thing straight. Skin undertones aren’t the same as your complexion or skin tone. Skin tones can be described as ivory, porcelain, deep, olive, and all those other words you see on foundation bottles. Skin tones are also prone to change, while undertones aren’t. Your skin’s undertone will remain the same no matter how dark or how light you become. You can also have the same skin tone as someone but have different undertones.
There are many types of skin tones, there are only three types of undertones: warm, cool, and neutral. If you’re cool, you have pink, bluish, or red hues. If you’re warm, you have yellow, peachy, or golden hues. If you’re neutral, you’re a mix between warm and cool. If you aren’t sure which undertone you are, they are called undertones after all. They aren’t the easiest to detect, so here are three common tips to uncovering what your undertone is.
1. Shakira said hips don’t lie. Well, neither do your veins .
To perform this test, just roll up your sleeves and look at the inside of your wrist. If your veins look more blue or purple, you have cool undertones. If they’re green or olive, you’re warm. If your veins are a mix of green, purple, and blue, then you have neutral undertones. Here’s a little guide to help you out:
2. One of the few times you’ll thank the summer sun.
You’re going to really put your skin to the test on this one since you’ll need to stand out in the sun and check how your skin reacts. If you tan easily but don’t sunburn, then you have warm or neutral undertones. If you have cool undertones, your skin will tend to burn and turn pink, but hey, everyone wears sunscreen, right?
3. All that makes your skin glitter isn’t gold.
Grab some silver and gold accessories, put personal preferences aside and see which one looks better on you. If you look better in gold, then you are warm toned. If you look better in silver, then cool toned. If you look good in both or cannot discern between either, you’re most likely neutral.
Using your undertones when deciding what to wear will make your life easier!
